Lately the price of health care has risen significantly. Because of this, the demand for less expensive health insurance plans increase everyday. Less expensive health plans are what people are looking for. However, these plans provide restricted services.Cheaper health coverage plans involve the cost of doctors’ visit, medicines, hospital stay and other medical costs. Doctor visits and prescription costs are not covered by some health plans available. Therefore, individuals need to ensure that, they select the right policy that provides all the basic coverage. Family health plans are a low cost health insurance program. This will cost you less than an individual’s health policy. To receive inexpensive health insurance plans, people may have to sacrifice a few things they have always loved to do. The first step is to compare the quotes given by different insurance companies. The lowest price is often only a few clicks away via the internet. Compared to the monthly premium option, yearly premium payments offers the best value in health coverage. Many insurers claim that monthly payment is more comfortable. However, a person has to pay more for this scheme. Under this plan, some transaction tax is needed when processing checks. Twelve separate transactions are necessary for a schedule that allows you to pay each month. Only one check is required in an yearly payment scheme. There is only one payment per year. Certain administrative and service rates with monthly premiums increase the cost of this payment. You never know if you are going to get a serious health condition in the years to come. Buying inexpensive health insurance is a good way to avoid potential problems in the future. Age and health of a person, are the two important factors that determine the rate of medical plans. The selection of group health insurance is a long-term plan. It is a great choice if it is associated with an organization or club. A member of an organization gets affordable health insurance programs. A viable choice is an association or other group. Different credit card firms offer association group health insurance policies, which are of low cost. Some consumers might prefer looking into private health insurance, if money is a particular concern. For instance, a 30 year old man living in Texas who is in good health might spend just $37 monthly for a private plan. National employees with individual coverage pay $250 more each year. But the thing is that you require a lot of time to buy cheaper private insurance.Check for state run programs that offer cheaper health insurance. Women and children have better odds of obtaining coverage. For example, a pregnant woman in California, who makes up to $63,000 per year, can qualify for health care through Medicare.More people are retiring before the age of 65. It is necessary to be 65 years of age to qualify for government health insurance US Medicare. Retired people, should check with their last employer to see if it includes health insurance. Higher premiums may apply to retired people. It is less expensive than buying health insurance yourself.

The current debate on health reform is getting lost in the numbers and dollars game in Congress. The arguments have become about price. What is the cheaper option? How can we pay for it? What is the best value? It is about the health insurance industry defending its ground, and attempting to maintain the current status quo. It is about how this industry may continue to make substantial profits out of the misery of all those patients who are sick, while maintaining a system that encourages them to avoid making payments as much as possible, to either patients or doctors. It is about a system where large special interests are able to negotiate low payments to doctors who have little bargaining power or strength, and which leads doctors to increasingly insist that patients pay them directly, rather than go through their insurers, hence letting the insurers completely off the financial hook.

Let’s put a real human face on what is happening in American healthcare at present.

As a physician working in a major academic medical center in California, let me tell a few stories of some of the horrors that I have seen that are directly caused by the appalling way that American healthcare is organized and paid for. These stories are clear evidence that we cannot continue with our current system of insurance funding, and simply have to have a public insurance option available to offer choice to all Americans, and to create competition for private insurance companies which they just don’t have at present.

Firstly let me say that I am extremely proud to be working in this medical center, which last year provided over $160 million of uncompensated care to the uninsured. This is about double the year before, a fact that is directly the consequence of the recession, increased numbers of uninsured patients, and an increased level of social poverty.

Think of the middle-aged homeless woman with diabetes who was admitted yet again with pneumonia. She has been sleeping rough, and in great personal danger having been assaulted numerous times. She cannot get out of a cycle of poverty, homelessness, illness and peril, and every time she recovers in hospital, it is sickening for the medical and nursing staff to know that she is being discharged to the street, where the cycle will continue. She has no insurance, no family, no future and no hope. Her medical prognosis is dreadful, she is unable to receive any regular follow up care for her diabetes, and she will probably not live for more than a few years unless there are major changes in her situation. She desperately needs good medical and social care, but there is little for her to receive, and she ends up costing society a huge amount because of her multiple expensive hospital admissions, occurring because she has no regular outpatient care. She would be so much better off with regular public health insurance, and would at least have a chance of breaking this cycle.

Think of the recently unemployed father of three young children whose wife died a year ago. He lost his company sponsored health insurance when he lost his job, and is unable to afford to pay the quoted premiums from other insurance companies because of his possible prior history of high blood pressure, found on two medical exams in the past, andwhich is seen as a risk factor for possible cardiac problems in the future.

Think of the patient with chronic schizophrenia who has suddenly had his treatment program closed by a county mental health department desperate to save money and faced with the decision to close either their firefighting or mental health services to meet their budget. This patient has nowhere to go for treatment, eventually runs out of medication, becomes psychotic again, tries to kill himself because of his delusions, and is re-admitted to an inpatient facility for several weeks at great public expense.

These are the faces of the health reform debate. These are the people that President Obama is fighting for, and which the insurance industry will not help, which they prefer to ignore. This is why we have to have a public health insurance option. And this is why we have to have true health reform in this country.

Peter Yellowlees MD has recently published “Your Health in the Information Age how you and your doctor can use the Internet to work together”. It is available at

Having worked on several public health projects and in several human services settings, I have a strong concern for the health and wellness of others. The overlaps I’ve recognized between individual health, environment, global discord, and social justice have led me to make some major changes in my own life.
If our work involves helping others and improving the world, it’s particularly important that we manage our own health and wellness. Fortunately, there are several ways we can do both simultaneously! In fact, many habits that benefit our health or the environment also have personal financial benefits (Blix & Heitmiller, 1997).
Uncontrollable factors like genetics and injuries aside, we generally stand a greater chance of living a long and productive life if we proactively maintain our own health. This gives us more time to pursue our visions in the world, share our gifts with others, and leave a lasting legacy.
However, we sometimes neglect ourselves while saving the world. In settings where the focus is upon helping others, I have seen and heard numerous examples of people who don’t give themselves the care they deserve.
Upon returning from a trip to assess public health needs of tsunami victims, a colleague told me of the signs of stress exhibited by many of the professional aid workers. Many of them, he observed, appeared highly anxious and engaged in behaviors like smoking at very high levels. The trauma surrounding them was taking a toll. Likewise, I have noted many visibly unhealthy professionals (including medical doctors) in health and human services settings where poor health was also a common issue among clients.
So what can we do to take better care of ourselves while also saving the world? Outside of addressing obvious factors like overextended workweeks in high-stress settings, there are a number of possibilities.
First, we may generate health-related benefits for ourselves simply by giving generously to others in our own unique way. This doesn’t need to be money; it can include expressing gratitude for someone’s friendship, sharing an artistic talent, or even lending a listening ear. Outside of fulfilling us and making us happy, giving can actually improve our health and longevity. Post and Neimark (2007) cite studies suggesting the following:
-Giving as a high school student predicts good physical and mental health up to 50 years later, into late adulthood.
-Giving and helping others reduces mortality in older adults, and depression and suicide risk in adolescents.
-Giving is more powerful than receiving in reducing mortality.
These powerful impacts, note Post and Neimark, may occur through a variety of mechanisms. Giving increases our feelings of self-efficacy, allows us to forget about the stressors in our own lives, enables us to forgive ourselves for our own mistakes, and enhances our sense of being part of a supportive larger community.
Secondly, we can assess where we are in different health-related areas of our life, and take actions in each. In his holistic wellness model as cited by Michael Arloski (2007), Don Ardell suggests that we need to take personal responsibility for our choices in several dimensions of life:
-stress management
-physical fitness
-nutritional awareness
-sensitivity to our physical, social and personal environments
I’ll outline a few ideas that blend the above dimensions while connecting personal and collective health and wellness.
As for stress management and physical fitness, think beyond traditional “exercise” like going to the gym if you find it difficult to motivate yourself. Arloski suggests viewing exercise as “movement.” To do this in a way that benefits both yourself and the world, consider your modes of transportation throughout the day.
For example, rather than getting in the car, can you walk or ride a bicycle? Rather than taking an elevator, can you use the stairs? These options give you a workout, save energy, and minimize pollution. Additionally, they can reduce stress, as “pedestrian rage” is much less common than “road rage.” They also have social benefits, given that it’s difficult to talk to a friend as they’re speeding by in their car, but relatively easy if you bump into each other on the sidewalk.
Perhaps you live in an area that has few or no sidewalks, no safe places to ride a bicycle, and no amenities within walking distance. In such cases, you may wish to look at how your choice of living location impacts health and well-being on both a personal and community level. Does your location support your values and priorities? If not, what would your ideal setting look like, and what steps would it take to attain that?
Also consider the energy efficiency of your home, and take steps such as insulating and utilizing low-energy lighting and appliances. Are you heating a house that’s much larger than you need? Fewer costs require less time at work to pay the bills, which contributes to life balance and well-being. These considerations also benefit others’ health in that energy savings often decrease air pollution (e.g., mercury) from coal-fired power plants.
Next, consider your diet. This has not only personal nutrition implications, but extensive environmental, economic and public health implications. What do you choose to put directly into your body every day, and does it support the self and world you envision? Food production and distribution requires energy and resources that affect the world in various ways.
Learn where your food is grown–the further it is shipped, the more energy it utilizes, which contributes to greenhouse gases. According to the “100 Mile Diet” project, our food ingredients travel an average of 1,500 miles. It’s a bit more challenging to eat produce in season year-round in colder climates, but making an effort to eat as locally as possible can have sizeable benefits. Support your local farmers and grocers carrying their goods.
Also related to diet, consider organic foods when possible, as pesticides can have unintended and unpredictable impacts upon your health and the environment. As more people demand such products, they will continue to become more available and more affordable. If you have some spare time and a little space in your yard, consider planting a garden. Then you’ll know what’s going into your food and where it comes from, and you’ll get some exercise, too!
You may also wish to explore the personal and environmental benefits associated with reductions in animal protein consumption. There is a sizeable well-documented (but not yet well-publicized) body of public health research on the risks of consuming animal-produced proteins, particularly meat and dairy, as well as literature on the “protein myths” that continue to circulate. Other important factors include consumption of whole foods (i.e., as they occur in nature) and dark leafy greens, but the animal protein factor alone is a significant one (Campbell & Campbell, 2006; Eisman, 2006; Robbins, 2006).
Additionally, it takes many times more energy, food and water to produce animal flesh than it does to produce plant-based food with the equivalent energy and nutritional value. By some estimates, it takes five pounds of grain and 2,500 gallons of water to produce each pound of beef (Kostigen & Rogers, 2007). Imagine how many additional people could be fed by taking out the “middleman”–or “middlecow.”
Concentrated animal farming also takes a toll on both individual health and the environment. Five tons of animal manure are produced every year per every individual in the U.S. (Greger, 2006). Waste water and runoff, which often includes hormones and other chemicals, pollutes local water sources. Not all chemicals can be filtered out by drinking water treatment, and their impacts upon humans are still being discovered.
When large numbers of animals and humans are frequently in unnaturally close quarters to one another, it creates additional opportunity for diseases (e.g., avian flu) to mutate and jump species (Greger, 2006). Additionally, when forests are cleared to support animal production (e.g., growth of food crops), it increases breeding areas for disease-transmitting insects like mosquitoes (Greger, 2006), and destroys larger pollution-absorbing vegetation.
Maintaining personal health and wellness takes a certain degree of time and commitment, as does improving the world. However, it doesn’t always have to be an “either/or” dilemma. Depending upon our own values and priorities, there are a number of ways in which we can integrate our efforts on both fronts and maximize our positive impact. I invite you to conduct your own research on these areas, and to create a life that works for you!

Today, every workplace in Britain is subject to health and safety regulations, as laid out by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), reporting to the Health and Safety Commission (HSC). Formed in 1974 following the Health and Safety at Work etc Act, their mission is to protect employees health and safety by ensuring risks in the changing workspace are properly controlled.

A fundamental principle of the British regulations on health and safety is that the responsibility for their compliance lies with those who own, manage and work in commercial and industrial concerns. This includes the self-employed, who must themselves assess the risks attached to their activity and take appropriate action. This involvement from the workforce, particularly appointed health and safety representatives, has been instrumental in raising health and safety standards in the last 30 years.

Still, accidents do happen, and high-profile industrial accidents such as the BP oil refinery explosion in Texas in 2005 remind us that adherence to health and safety regulations is more than just bureaucratic legislation to allow employers to avoid punitive measures. The US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, inspecting the Texas-based oil refinery, released its findings earlier this year, identifying numerous failings in equipment, staff management, risk assessment, maintenance, working culture at the site and general health and safety assessments. This negligence led to a major explosion in an isomerisation unit at the site, which claimed the life of 15 workers and left over 170 others injured.

The need to reduce risks and take appropriate action under British health and safety law lies behind the qualification so far as is reasonably practicable. This essentially requires that good practice should be followed whenever it is established, and sets the high standard that is reasonably practicable for the duty holder to take precautionary measures, such as maintaining the standard of the on-site safety equipment up to the point where taking further measures would be grossly disproportionate to any residual risk.

Ultimately a common goal for both employers and employees is to ensure a productive and safe working life for all employees and a retirement free from long-term consequences of occupational injury and disease. Changes in technology and our culture may change the way business is done and the demand for new products, but it is still vital for employers to keep up-to-date on new legislation and continuously asses risks associated with the processes within their business.

This information is very useful for those that need or want a new health insurance policy, but they are unfamiliar with what to look for in an insurance policy. However, before discussing in detail about health insurance plans, let us observe why health insurance is important. The cost for any medical aid are going up continuously and due to these rising costs it has become a necessary need to have health insurance plans. The situations arise at times when when unplanned health expenses are to be borne beyond the budget ,and at such times it is not possible for a person to bear all expense on their own. An for this reason, opting for ideal health insurance plans is absolutely essential for people. When a client seeks help with their health insurance, agents discuss four different types of policies with them. Individuals need to pay deduction to health coverage companies for medical plans to obtain benefits Deductibles are just another expense that everybody has to pay when applying for insurance. Health insurance firms pay nearly 80% of medical bills after insurers pay the initial 20% of the total billed amount. Buyers may select any doctors to get medical services and pay fees to these doctors directly. The reimbursement is 80% of the amount that the bill shows, and for this it is imperative that the bill has to be first obtained from the concerned place and then presented to the insurance company. A traditional health plan is a type of health insurance. HMO plan: An HMO (HMO) is a kind of health insurance policy which pertains primarily to long term care of the insured party. Many will find this plan cost more reasonable than a major medical plan. The list of doctors given by the insurance company is where people have to select their doctors from. These doctors provide medical services to them. If required, they may also connect with distant specialists and other hospitals in order to ensure the best care is given. Because of this, maximum people in US opt for this type of health plan. ***PPO health plan: PPO*** (PPO) It is very similar to an HMO plan. Health insurance companies provide referrals only to in-network providers. Insured patients self-refer to out-of-network providers. Here, people may choose in-network or out-network doctors as per their wish. But, if individuals opt for physicians out-of-network, they will pay big fees compared to the affordable rates of the in-network physicians. The policy of the health companies is to pay 80% 0f the bill amount to insured people whether it is in- network or out-network.

Mold is a fungus growth, which begins with a minute spore. Toxic black molds can be found anywhere a dark and damp environment allows them to grow. Spores can be breathed in, absorbed through the skin or ingested on our food. Young children, senior citizens and anyone with immune deficiencies caused by disease, chemotherapy, etc are particularly vulnerable to grave illness following exposure to microbial contamination.

Laboratory studies in animals and at the cellular level offer supporting data for the direct toxicity of fungal spores and mycotoxins in mammalian lungs (University of Connecticut Health Center Report in 2004). A health study by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health links adult-onset asthma to workplace mold exposure. And in 1997, the Centers for Disease Control announced an apparent link between mold contamination in homes and cases of infant pulmonary hemorrhage.

Other common effects from molds are pneumonitis, upper respiratory problems, sinusitis, dry cough, skin rashes, stomach upset, headaches, disorientation and bloody noses. Severe exposure can lead to internal bleeding, kidney and liver failure and pulmonary emphysema. There are numerous reasons for the rising occurrence of mold and mildew in our homes, one of which is the federal regulations pertaining to energy conservation call for new construction methods and materials, meaning that homes dont breathe as freely as before, trapping moisture vapors inside the building. As a result, mold remediation and prevention have become hot topics in both the health and building industries.

What are we supposed to believe and what should our next move be to defend our families, and ourselves with all the media exposure to toxic mold in the last year or so? First, we must take this threat seriously. If you see mold in your home, get it tested as soon as you can. Get your home tested if you have a family member with an unexplained illness, respiratory irritation, rash, etc that seems to get better when they are away from home.

Controlling Mold Growth and Exposure

The way to control indoor mold growth is to limit dampness, there is no realistic way to get rid of absolutely all mold and spores from the indoor environment

There are air purifiers and cleaners on the market that claim to help lessen quantities of mold spores in the air, do your homework, these might also be of help

Reduce indoor humidity to prevent mold growth by: using air-conditioners and de-humidifiers, and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, cleaning and dishwashing

Clean and dry any wet or damp building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth

Use water and detergent to clean mold off hard surfaces, and dry completely

Do not install carpeting where there is a continuous moisture problem

Remedy as soon as possible, any moisture or leakage problems in your home

Health care education is a discipline that affects the entire realm of society. It provides the grounds on which the societies can foster saver means of enjoying their lives and keeping their lives at harms length from infectious diseases and infections. Public health professionals play a detrimental role in uplifting the society and its overall performance. It is imperative that the courses taught at any certification level of health care education be comprehensively synchronized with the market trends and the ailments that are prevalent in society.

Over the course of last decade, major diseases and infections all over the world that were once labeled as major threats have now been categorized and given under control ratings. Thousands of people are saved each year through different divisions and units of the health care departments. Heath care teams work around the clock in providing verbal and written messages to the masses. Local health care programs in communities provide schools with information regarding pollution, hazards of smoking and taking drugs. Health care professionals also execute programs in vaccination techniques in all corners of the world. Due to the criticality of their job roles, educational institutions rolling out health care programs need to ensure that all the possibilities of controlling and preventing key diseases and infections are taught and international trends are communicated. The students need to learn the art of saving lives without neglecting their lives as well.

Management of health care institutions needs to be strongly linked with the studies and research being performed in the market. Since health care is not an individualized profession but a career path that effects the entire population, various courses need to be created and taught that foster and educate students on all the research methodologies in the market and how their job roles change as per location or assignments. Health care is one of the most diverse and spread out knowledge bases in the world. It ranges from physical health care prevention techniques all the way to the mental stress along poverty stricken areas.

Hundreds of programs are available that provide short term courses and certifications for health care professionals. Community colleges, vocational schools and even private institutions all offer a plethora of degrees and certificates that provide different levels of expert knowledge for people interested in health care. Public colleges and universities are also provided grants and partake upon different researches within communities to streamline health care issues. In many of the specialized institutions offering advanced degrees in health care industry, extensive research is being performed both on clinical health care issues as well as problems relating to mental health care concerns for society.

The intent of all the health care education colleges and universities should be to identify health care risks and coordinate public programs and public services that not only improve mental and physical health, prevent diseases and health risks, eliminate violence in communities but also benchmark statistics and requirements for quality civil and public living standards. The benchmarks will be used as standards all over the world.

A guide through the Health and Safety Passports Maze

I need to see your safety passport before you can come on site. Literally hundreds of thousands of people hear that phrase or something like it everyday in the UK and yet Safety Passports can seem like a black art to some. What are they? Where do I get one and most importantly which one do I get? They are the dilemmas that most people are faced with.

Well, let me see if I can demystify the Health and Safety Passports industry a little for you!

In the UK there are three main players, each having issued over six figures worth of Safety Passports to individual contractors.

So do I need more than one passport?

The problem is that it is down to the Client as to which particular passport scheme they implement on their site. Some passports can be interchangeable with a client like the CCNSG and SPA, the one that is least interchangeable is the CSCS card, but it is always worth checking with the client first.

CCNSG

The CCNSG which was the original safety passport of them all tends to be used most in the Power Generation Industries, the steel, oil, gas, and chemicals industries. It is a generic scheme, which is not industry specific and is therefore open to clients outside of the engineering construction industry.

The Passport is obtained after taking two days basic generic health and safety training and passing a multi choice test.

CSCS Card

The CSCS card is primarily used in the construction industry. – There is no required training.

To obtain a CSCS card workers are required to have completed a 45-minute multiple-choice test on health and safety in construction. It is a screen-based test and there are a maximum of 40 questions to answer. Workers can choose to attend a construction health and safety awareness course beforehand.

SPA Passport

SPA (Safety Pass Alliance), have a modular passport which has been developed with numerous industry sectors, including Food & Drink, Quarry, Petrol Retail, General Manufacturing, Building Maintenance, Pharma, Construction, Ports, Logistics, Landfill and others.

The passport is usually two days training. The first day is “The Core Day which provides generic Health & Safety training. The second day is an industry specific day that addresses the particular safety needs of that sector. A delegates understanding is assessed by multiple choice.

So what is the Passport?

As evidence that the contractors have successfully completed the training, contractors are generally issued with a plasticised photographic pass. This enables the client to restrict entry to those who can prove they have undergone the training by producing their individual passport on site arrival.

One other question I get asked all the time is – So do they work ?

It has always been difficult to quantify the results of implementing a Safety Passport scheme on site, but over the past couple of years the SPA have been publishing results from clients. The full articles can be found on the SPA website but here are a few snippets from articles below:

The introduction of the safety passport at Nestle UK was part of a review and tightening of all our own contractor management safety procedures. This has resulted in a reduction of contractor accident statistics by 68 per cent over the last two years.

Metronet using the SPA Underground Railway Passport as part of the Health and Safety Initiative led to a 75 per cent reduction in accident statistics in only 18 months.

Leicester City Council – The first local authority in England to introduce the SPA Building Maintenance safety passport scheme for its housing maintenance operatives has seen a 32 per cent drop in its accident rates in the last three years.

So there we have it, we train literally thousands of contractors a year and I hope that I have managed to clear up some of the common questions that we get asked by those people every day of the week.
